Mother-to-Be Jill Scott on Pregnancy and Motherhood

jillscottartEssence.com has a wonderful feature article on their Web site today. If you haven’t heard the news yet, Jill Scott is pregnant and expecting a son in April. What’s so amazing about her pregnancy is that she was told that would never be able to conceive, but as we all know, everything is on God’s timetable.

Here’s some sage advice from Jill to other moms:

It’s so hard to believe, it’s hard to have faith, especially when things aren’t working out. It’s difficult and a challenge when you continuously ask for what you want and need in your life or at least what you think you want and need in your life, but that’s when you have to believe and have faith the most. Who knows how the blessings will flow or at what time or what hour those lessons are going to come. So I’d simply share to learn to be grateful for everything. When you give up, when you start to believe again, when you’re crying, when it hurts so bad, when you’re too embarrassed to face anybody— whatever—just be thankful because I believe that’s all God really wants from us is to be appreciative. It’s been my way of thinking and I’m hoping to teach this lil’ one these things.

Celebrate Your Growing Belly

When I was pregnant — both times — I didn’t have the forethought to celebrate my growing bellies and commemorate the memories with a belly cast. There is only one thing I regret about my pregnancies and this is it: Not doing a belly cast. If you are pregnant right now, seriously consider doing one before your baby is delivered and you lose the moment forever.

I saw this gorgeous belly cast today — all decorated in beautiful mosaics — on a blog and it re-ignited how much I regret not savoring my own pregnancies.

Execumama, defined

By Akilah S. Richards

DaydreamIn 2004, I made the transition from twenty-something working woman to Execumama; and it has been remarkable! The evolution into motherhood is life-altering for any woman; especially one in her twenties, still facing the challenges of deciding on her career path and defining her post high school/college self. Add to that society’s unyielding assertion that a woman is either a good business person or a good mother; not, God forbid, both. I had finished college four years prior, and was on a very specific path, tunnel vision blinkers affixed. Then came Marley; occupant of my uterus, and shifter of my paradigm. I couldn’t possibly be a great mother and a successful businesswoman, right? Wrong! I was doing what society had trained me to do; choosing between my career and my child.

My dear readers, I’ve learned that we can choose NOT to choose!

Make no mistake, the priority is steadfastly placed on my children, but I don’t have to entirely abandon my goals to focus on them. After Marley, I did some soul-searching and decided to go for gusto and pursue my “first baby”, writing. Since then, every position I’ve held has allowed me to further hone my craft. Part-time day care has seen me and the hubs through to our current lives of raising two amazing souls, and full-time entrepreneurship. He owns a brand enhancement and graphic design company, and I’m a budding, well…Execumama! Undoubtedly, it’s a tightrope, and oftentimes, only faith and doggedness carry us through. But we’re controlling our time, and that feels fabulously right!

In my first book, Execumama: A Pocket-guide for the Twenty-something Mommy on the Move, I was blessed to interview dozens of Execumamas who successfully navigate the high seas of working motherhood, brazen enough to pursue their personal and professional goals. Here are two of the Execumama Mantras that grace the pages of this quick but substantive read.

  • Mantra Two: Motherhood does not define me. I, in fact, define motherhood. I will create and live an ever-evolving definition of motherhood with pride, commitment, and God-granted energy.
  • Mantra Four: My child gets the benefit of a woman who is mentally stimulated and challenged. I will free my mind of the thoughts that put unnecessary limits on my work performance, and of the thoughts that limit the quality of the time I spend with my child.

Blaze your own path, Ma’ – it suits you!

Book Review: The New Mom’s Guide to Your Body After Baby

istock_000005613366xsmall
It is such a treat to receive books that are real gems. You know instinctively when you read a new book that you will either skim through it and rarely, if ever, pick it up, or if you will read it time and time again. Believe us when we say: The New Mom’s Guide to Your Body After Baby is a book you will read, appreciate, and recommend countless times to your girlfriends.

revellThe New Mom’s Guide to Your Body After Baby is a pocket-sized masterpiece full of real-life wisdom for moms who have just given birth. There is no sugarcoating going on in Your Body After Baby. Susan Wallace and Monica Reed, MD tell it like it is from passing blood clots after giving birth, to forgetting large portions of what went on during a C-section, to the agonizing pain of uterine contractions when your uterus is reshaping itself after birth. They don’t miss a beat. Your Body After Baby is a book that you will truly and honestly appreciate because the authors tell you exact details about how your body transitions after you have finally come home from the hospital. Susan and Monica understand that authentic, “no holds bar” information is what moms, especially new moms, need because it is sheer hell trying to figure it out on your own.

When you are going to all of those baby showers this spring, make sure to drop Your Body After Baby in a gift bag. At  $8.99, it’s a real steal. The expectant mom will thank you, but only after she’s gotten into the swing of new motherhood.

New Study Examines Moms By Race

istock_000001799194xsmallI along with other prominent mom bloggers from Mom in the City, Mel, A Dramatic Mommy and Integrated Mother partnered with BSM Media to look at mothers by race. The findings: Although mothers are largely the same no matter race, there are still marked differences between us.

Main findings:

  • African American moms are more likely to delay major purchases (57%) and avoid stores to reduce shopping (54%). Caucasian moms are coping by using coupons and discount codes (73%) and driving fewer places to conserve gas (62%).
  • Caucasian moms named managing the desires of their children for material things as a challenge (45%), while African American moms are battling with affordable housing (35%).
  • While online, African American mothers are more likely to read articles (68%) and experience music (45%). Caucasian mothers are likely to frequent social networks (45%) and message boards (43%).

Click here to read more about the study. It is my hope that this research helps companies better market to black moms and do more outreach online to black mom bloggers (there are tons of us) as opposed to going to traditional media like magazines and radio to tout their message for black moms.

Are these findings consistent with your experience? Do you delay big puchases as opposed to using coupons? Is affordable housing one of your biggest challenges? Do you prefer to read articles online and listen to music as opposed to using social networks and message boards?
