Babies Like Good People

A very interesting study out of Yale and published in the journal Nature on November 22, 2007 says babies as young as six-months-old prefer good samaritans over mean people.

In a first-ever study, researchers showed babies scenes where a character was helped up a hill by a friendly character (helper) and then these babies were showed the same character being forced down a hill by a meaner character (hinderer). When the babies (ages six months and ten months) were asked to choose which object they wanted, 14 of the 16 10-month-olds chose the helper character and all 12 of the six-month-olds chose the helper character.

“This supports the view that our ability to evaluate people is a biological adaptation–universal and unlearned,” said the authors of the study.

You can take a look at brief videos of the studies and the children picking the helper objects on the Yale web site. This gives us much more insight into our babies’ little, bitty brains. They are certainly processing more than we give them credit for.
